Summative Assessments

Whereas formative assessments provide guidance to students as they are working and help us to refine our teaching, summative assessments look at the composite of multiple parts of a project, along with the finished product. Meaningful summative assessments are the natural result of clear, intentional connections among all parts of a unit plan.

Your big idea, enduring understanding, and essential questions shape unit objectives, which shape lesson objectives, which shape dialogue and instructional activities.

Meaningful formative assessments ensure that dialogue and instructional activities are purposeful.

Purposeful dialogue and instructional activities ensure that students create a meaningful final product and that they understand the significance of their learning.

The significance of student learning is then expressed in summative assessments, which then impact teaching strategies and the content of units that follow.
